Welcome to 6th Grade

Hello to everyone, and I hope that you and your child had a great first two weeks of sixth grade!  It seems that everyone is enjoying switching classes this year and seeing different teachers throughout the day.  I keep reminding them that they are closer and closer to being in junior high, so switching a few classes a day is similar to what junior high will be like.

First and foremost, I love to share our learning with our school family and the world.  I have set up this blog page for our homeroom.  I have found that this is an excellent way to share our learning with parents.  It also includes links that the students can utilize for both literacy skills and social studies.  Please check out our page.  We will also be using a Twitter account to share our learning with the world.  Feel free to follow our Twitter feed.

Your child has a planner this year to record any homework assignments or upcoming events.  Please ask your child to see his/her planner so you can see if there are any assignments that are due.  (There are a few social studies projects that will be coming up that you can ask your child about.) Also, please remind your child that homework needs to be completed at home and/or study hall.  I have tried to explain to the students that they should not save all of their homework for study hall because they may need more time to complete their work.  Please encourage your child to complete most homework at home.

The students have been bringing their iPads home every
night.  The expectation is that the students charge their iPads at home at night so they will be ready for school the next day.  We would like to recommend that the students find a safe place to charge their iPad and to check that the iPad is charging.  We have also talked to the students about how their devices are a learning tool.
They should not be using the device for other purposes.

On Friday, September 11th, the whole district will participate in the "Fuel Up to Be Fit" day.  On this day, students are encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle through a healthy diet and exercise.  To celebrate this day, we will be having a school-wide assembly, followed by physical activity.  At that time, the 6th graders will walk to East Park and have a variety of activities they could participate in.  Students can play Frisbee golf, bags, kickball, baseball/softball, and tag.  If students would like to play Frisbee golf, bags, or baseball/softball, we are asking for students to bring those items to school that day.  We are looking forward to it!

Our first field trip will take place on September 24th.  We will be traveling to the Nature Center for Environmental Awareness Day.  Students will attend sessions like: Fish Identification and Ecology, Water Testing, Orienteering, and many other environmental sessions.  We will be leaving the school at 9:15 AM and returning to school at 2:00 PM.  Students will need to bring their own sack lunch.  We would also encourage the students to bring extra water to drink.  If you would like a school sack lunch, please let me know and we will have them prepare one for your child for that day.
