Busy, Busy Week

Hey all!  I cannot get over how fast the weeks have gone.  We are so busy all the time that sometimes it is hard to sit and get a rest!

First and foremost, thank you so much to the families that came and visited with me at Parent Teacher Conferences.  It was wonderful to hear from you how your child feels about 6th grade and any questions or concerns that you (or your child)  may have.  Please let me know if you continue to have questions or concerns.  Thanks!

In literacy, your child began their first book club for 6th grade.  The theme, or topic, for our book clubs is on tolerance and acceptance of others.  Students were able to choose their top 5 book choices and then were placed into groups based upon that.  They have assignments with their book clubs nearly every night so please ask your child about it.  Your child has filled out a reading calendar, where the group decided on the reading assignments for the next two weeks.  To give you and idea of their assignments for books clubs, please read below:

  • Monday: reading assignment and then a "Literature Circle" role of either Summarizer, Questioner, Word Finder, Visualizer, or Connector
  • Tuesday: reading assignment and then a reading journal response
  • Wednesday: reading assignment and then a "Literature Circle" role of either Summarizer, Questioner, Word Finder, Visualizer, or Connector
  • Thursday: reading assignment and then a reading journal response
  • Weekends: reading assignments only
In science, we have been studying the ancient Egyptians and their process of embalming.  To give them the hands experience of embalming and mummifying, we mummified potatoes in our classroom.  We were surprised to see the changes that occured from placing potatoes in a "natron" salt mixture as compared to leaving the potatoes out without any salt.  The students discovered the potatoes turned black and shrunk!  I guess embalming can really work!

Also in social studies, we participated in a STEM activity where we made our own mummies with just 3 pipe cleaners, 1 piece of tape, and a whole roll of paper towels.  The students loved this activity and the mummies turned out to be cute little butterballs!

We would like to thank the veterans for their service.  The students had invited veterans in to eat lunch with them on Veteran's Day.  We were surprised to see about 90 veterans (and some spouses) join students for lunch.  Wow!  Thank a veteran today!

Lastly, we will have an astronaut coming to our school today.  Clayton Anderson will be visiting our school and speaking to our students on Thursday.  We are excited about what we can learn from him.  Welcome Clayton!  Here is a little more information about him on his website:
